I think I was only 4 or 5 years old when Old Spice came on the air, but I still remember it. I remember the commercials for it, the funny costumes, the guys in the cars. I also remember a funny radio skit they did with Pat O'Brien, who was the host of the show.
Well, there were a couple of other ones. But the reason I remember the Old Spice aftershave commercials and some of the skits and stuff, is because they came on the radio when I was driving home from school. I can remember waiting for them to go through the commercials when I got home.
I remember the show very well. It was on Saturday afternoons, about 4pm I think, and they would play a bit of music or a short talk show. Then they would play an old movie that they had a live audience to watch with. Then they would go to some of the lesser known movies, ones that I can't remember the titles of. It was a show like an old movie matinee. And I have the biggest collection of old movies.
Old Spice was an early success, and the show stuck around until 1948, when Mutual (probably tired of having a janitorial aftershave show) bumped it to the more prestigious afternoon slot on CBS.
The Klomp family was a cut above most Mutual shows, and was similar to the Your Home Folks series in that it presented a family of people who lived in a houseful of comical characters. After the Klomp family was featured for a number of months, they were replaced by Spotlight, the name of the show. During this time, Mutual often featured a comedy duo known as The Hacketts, who were also on the Your Home Folks show.
