Cataclysm has a number of standard customization options, such as the ability to change item tooltips and flight meters, show or hide basic inventory items, and toggle icons. However, the UI remains essentially the same as it is in vanilla WoW. Cataclysm does take a few small steps toward customization, but the UI is generally still fairly straightforward compared to expansions in which a lot has changed.

In Cataclysm, many of the game's miscellaneous features are built into the UI. For example, arenas automatically appear in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and constructing a character is now handled through Blizzard's Character Sheet. This greatly simplified the process, and also made it easier to add features like this over the years.

Be warned, though. With some of the mini-features built right into the UI, you may find it difficult to create or customize a UI that is completely cohesive or meets your personal preferences. One of the big changes in Cataclysm is that many of the game's miscellaneous features are integrated into the UI. As a result, many really old wow addons may become redundant in Cataclysm. For example, the game now automatically opens up a specific panel in its default UI for the first time in ages, but previous versions of that addon used to display the information within a number of separate panels, and you could customize exactly how it was displayed. Cataclysm's UI is a bit more complicated than in vanilla WoW. For example, there are two different Control Bar options now: one for Area of Effect spells like Frost Nova, and another for all other spells.

Normally each different type of spell has a different Control Bar. In Cataclysm, all Area of Effect spells are placed in the same Control Bar except for Frost Nova, which is placed in its own bar. All spells that aren't Area of Effect novas are placed in the normal Control Bar, and all other spells are set to have a default bar that isn't customizable. (To change the default behavior, open up your Control Bar menu and select "Change Control Bar Layout".) Unfortunately, this means that if you want to customize the default Control Bar, you have to actually change the layout of the Control Bar every time you switch to an Area of Effect spell. d2c66b5586
